What is scalp micropigmentation?

,Scalp micropigmentation (also known as SMP) is a simple process that involves applying tiny micro dots of pigment to the scalp to give your hair a thicker, fuller appearance. Whether you’re looking for frontal baldness treatment for a receding hairline or you’d like to give thinning hair more depth, SMP is an effective, long-lasting and immediate option.
Read on for more details on how it works and what you can expect from your scalp micropigmentation procedure.
How does scalp micropigmentation work?
Are you looking for a non-surgical procedure for your thinning hair? Scalp micropigmentation is non-invasive and does not require major incisions or hair removal, making it a quick and straightforward treatment.
Our trained scalp micropigmentation practitioners will carefully implant thousands of micro impressions into the scalp, using organic pigment that’s specially designed for use on the scalp. The pigment mimics the appearance of hair follicles to add density to thinning areas. It can also be used to create the appearance of a close-shaved haircut.
It’s important to note that SMP is not the same as traditional tattooing or micro blading. SMP uses specialist equipment and specifically designed fine needles that creates a precise pattern and applies the pigment between 1.5 and 2mm into the dermal layer.
In most cases, your SMP treatment will be carried out over 3 sessions to build the level of density needed. A typical session takes around two to four hours, depending on the size of the area being treated.
Who can have SMP?
Many people choose SMP to combat the stress of thinning hair or a receding hairline. Scalp micropigmentation is an ideal treatment for both men and women, our treatments are widely used to camouflage thinning hair, from partial and extensive hair loss, most types of alopecia, to concealing accidental and surgical scarring of the scalp.
Many of our clients also choose to combine SMP with a hair transplant, seen as a ‘finishing touch’ to achieve maximum coverage. This is particularly the case when a lack of donor hair doesn’t quite provided the level of density required from the hair transplant.
As with any procedure of this type, it is important to discuss the potential risks and benefits with your practitioner before going ahead with your treatment. If you’re concerned about any allergies or sensitivities, these along with your current health will be discussed thoroughly during your consultation before any treatment is given.
Benefits of scalp micropigmentation
For our clients, scalp micropigmentation is often a life-changing process that positively impacts their self-esteem.
The most common reasons our clients give for seeking a hair restoration solution are to look younger, to increase confidence, to have a more defined hairstyle, or to hide imperfections.
Other benefits of SMP include:
- Immediate results — you’ll be able to see the results of SMP after your first session. This sets the foundations, and a further two sessions will typically complete a fully camouflaged look.
- Minimal recovery time — following each scalp micropigmentation treatment, you can expect a quick recovery time. By following our easy aftercare advice, most people can get back to their usual daily activities immediately.
- Long-lasting and durable — scalp micropigmentation offers immediate, permanent results that typically last 4 – 6 years before a top up of colour is required.
- Low-maintenance —Once your treatment is complete ongoing scalp care is minimal; you’ll need to protect your scalp from UV rays, preferably avoid alcohol-based skincare products, and keep the treated area moisturised. Aside from that, you don’t need to worry about a time consuming maintenance routine.
